Chiltern Railway Walk — London

Wembley Stadium from the summit of Roundwood Park

Marylebone to Denham (38.99km; 341m ascent)

The first station after leaving Marylebone is Wembley Stadium, and this first stage eats up the best part of 15km on its own. The route takes in the Regent’s Canal, Queen’s Park, Kensal Rise, Roundwood Park (with its stunning and suddenly-revealed view of Wembley Stadium), the pathway along the River Brent, and the Tokyngton estate. On leaving Wembley, the stations are closer together, with parks and (usually small) streets linking them up. The final London stages include away-from-the-houses paths in the grassland of Ickenham Marsh, among the trees of Bayhurst Wood, and beside the gravestones of Harefield’s Australian Military Cemetery.

I consider Denham to be the transition station between London and the country. Even though it is not an Oyster-valid station, the 331 bus to Uxbridge from the bottom of the station approach is Oyster-valid, and all but the last kilometre is within London. The station is still within the M25 (which is crossed between Denham Golf Club and Gerrards Cross).
