Hubs

Some places lend themselves to being hubs, where you may pitch up for a few days’ car-free walking, fanning out on a different route (or part of a route) each day. The hub becomes a walking-place for recreation at walking pace. Hubs in this area include

  • Cowes
Cowes is the hub for the north of the island. Ferries link Cowes with Southampton.
  • Newport
Newport is the obvious hub if you need to cover all parts of the island.
  • Ryde
Ryde is the hub for the north-east of the island. The Island Line trains stop at Ryde, and ferries connect Ryde with Portsmouth.
  • Sandown
Sandown is the hub if you are concentrating on the south-east of the island. The Island Line trains stop at Sandown.
  • Ventnor
Ventnor may be close to Sandown, but it is much more convenient for the south-west of the island.
  • Yarmouth
Yarmouth is the obvious hub for the west and north-west of the island. Ferries connect Yarmouth with Lymington.
