The great majority of the sections of the 5500km of coastal paths round England and Wales have public transport facilities which range from adequate to excellent, but there are some gaps. Here, we list stretches of more than 20km of coast path without any public transport. A gap of over 30km is highlighted in yellow; a gap of over 40km is highlighted in red. Escape points are given in parentheses: if only a place-name is given, it indicates a pick-up/set-down point by taxi or private arrangement.
The coastal route is defined by lowest crossing point (including ferries). The entire route, extended from Marshall Meadows to Cockburnspath to link with the John Muir Way, is contained in our public transport connection matrix set (1254 locations, 111 matrices).

The England and Wales Coast Paths incorporate a number of exclusively coastal routes, including the National Trails listed below.
- Llwybr Arfordir Sir Benfro / Pembrokeshire Coast Path
- Norfolk Coast Path (usually conjoined with the inland Peddars Way)
- South West Coast Path
Often, a local coastal path will take a marginally different route (the Llwybr Arfordirol Ynys Môn / Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path is one example): our matrices assume the route marked on the map as the England/Wales Coast Path.
