There are more than ten thousand kilometres of marked walks, making up a dense network across the Netherlands, which are administered through Wandelnet, the national walkers’ group, some in association with Nivon, a “friends of nature” group which runs hostels, organises activities, and develops country leisure pursuits. More recently, other named paths have grown up outwith the Wandelnet structure — for instance, the Grebbeliniepad, following the former defensive line from the Rijn to Amersfoort and northwards to Spakenburg on the IJsselmeer (formerly part of the Zuider Zee), has been developed by a group dedicated to the defensive line.
