A 19km railbed walk between Consett and Broompark. - Pennine Way
A walk of 422km between Edale and Kirk Yetholm; this National Trail does not qualify as a Green Walk. In addition to the 45km gap between Byrness (sketchy bus service) and Kirk Yetholm, buses connect with different settlements from the next access point in many areas. - River Wear Trail
A 16km route following the River Wear between Washington (Fatfield) and the river’s outflow in Sunderland (Roker). - Teesdale Way
A 148km walk between Dufton in Cumbria and Teesmouth. - Tyne and Wear Heritage Way
A circular walk of 130km encircling the Newcastle/Gateshead conurbation, planned to include a breadth of heritage sites. - Weardale Way

Some places lend themselves to being hubs, where you may pitch up for a few days’ car-free walking, fanning out on a different route (or part of a route) each day. The hub becomes a walking-place for recreation at walking pace. Hubs in this area include

Darlington serves as a gateway to the dales to the west, to Cleveland, and to the coast between Sunderland and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. - Durham
Durham is the natural hub for the DH postcode area, with links into other areas to the east, north and south. - Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Newcastle is a hub for much of the area (even though it lies outside the area’s bounds), with easy links to all but that part of the area served from Darlington.
