River Ayr Way

River Ayr Way

A walk of 66km between Glenbuck Loch and Ayr.

The route follows the river, with its upstream terminus next to the Bill Shankly Memorial, and the downstream terminus at Ayr’s South Pier. Public transport connections (8 locations) are available at key staging points. Muirkirk (the bus-head for Glenbuck) and Ayr may serve as base stations for the upland and lowland sections respectively.

Observations

Walkers should note that there is a 6km walk-in to Glenbuck from the bus terminus at Muirkirk: the only option is to walk the route out to Glenbuck Loch, and then to retrace steps to Muirkirk.

The route is used at times as a challenge race, and is best avoided on event days.
