West Highland Way

A walk of 154km between Milngavie (on the north-western edge of Glasgow) and Fort William.
This National Trail is accessible using public transport links (17 locations) throughout, at least for the hardier and more experienced walker. Apart from Glasgow and Fort William at each end, the only other base station would be a choice between Crianlarich and Tyndrum.
Observations
It must be said that it needs careful planning with the timetables, though, and that, though it is possible to get back to base (even if it is in Glasgow) each evening, this may not be the best route for exclusively single-day sorties.
